Project Study Area

143rd Street is a roadway that runs east-west in unincorporated Cook County under the jurisdiction of the Cook County Department of Transportation and Highways. The 143rd Street Bridge Over Branch of Tinley Creek is located between Ridgeland Avenue to the west and Central Avenue to the east. The project study area is limited to the 143rd Street Bridge Over Branch of Tinley Creek. Any roadway improvements required will be related to the bridge replacement.

About the Bridge

The existing 143rd Street Bridge is approximately 90 years old and spans over a Branch of Tinley Creek in a west-east direction with a total length of 32 feet. The bridge carries two lanes of traffic in each direction with a shared-use path on the north side. The bridge was originally constructed in 1931 and was reconstructed in 1987 and rehabilitated in 1997 and 2008. The bridge was last inspected in 2022.

Project Need

The 143rd Street Bridge is reaching the end of its service life and is in need of replacement.

    • April 2022 – August 2023: Preliminary Engineering
    • August 2023: Public Information Meeting
  • September 2023 – October 2024: Detailed Design (Phase II) Engineering
  • 2025: Construction (pending plan readiness and land acquisition, if required)
